A Pragmatic Study of Dysphemism in Steven Berkoff’s Play East

The present study pragmatically explores categories and functions of dysphemisms in Steven Berkoff’s play East. objective the paper is to explore characters’ use dysphemism; its apply Allan Burridge’s (2006) classification dysphemism, Goffman’s (1962) notion face, Brown Levinson’s (1987) theory politeness play. To gather examine text, researcher adopts a qualitative descriptive approach which involves himself being instrument who does everything. data are taken from script that read re-read identify dysphemistic expressions then coded be analyzed by using discourse analysis method. results reveal all characters insult most used followed profanity obscenity. In addition, they utilize dysphemism express hatred, anger, disrespect, ridicule, each other. Besides, do not mitigate their attack other positive face audience’s too. findings beneficial pupils, teachers, writers, journalists, TV producers, footballers, orators, filmmakers, politicians anticipated familiar with terms order avoid them neutral ones as alternatives.
